Did you know that we started as a vermicomposting farm?

When our family decided to leave the city behind and journey into our next adventure, we started out as a vermicomposting farm known as The Worm Hookup. Improving soil health through sustainable farming practices is still at the root of our farm practice, but over time, we discovered other exciting aspects of farming to explore. Growth comes in many forms, including our passion for producing farm fresh eggs alongside our vermicomposting efforts.

Vermicomposting, also referred to as worm composting, is the process of utilizing earthworms to break down organic waste—such as food scraps, crop residue, and manures—into a nutrient-rich material known as vermicompost or worm castings, affectionately termed black gold by us!

How vermicomposting works:

1. Organic waste is added to a worm bin.

2. Worms process the organic matter in their digestive tracts.

3. Worms excrete the end product, which is worm castings.

Benefits of vermicomposting:

- Diverts food scraps and organic matter from landfills.

- Improves soil structure, aeration, and water retention.

- Provides a valuable soil amendment from waste, promoting sustainable practices.

- Helps seeds germinate more quickly and develop stronger root systems.

- Increases the microbial population in the soil.

Vermicomposting at home:

Starting a worm bin at home is a fun activity for the whole family! It’s a great way to take small steps toward a healthier planet while enjoying the benefits of sustainable farming practices. You can keep a worm bin almost anywhere, whether on the patio, in the garden, or even in compact spaces like under the kitchen sink. A well-managed worm bin will not have an odor and will conveniently divert food scraps away from the landfill while providing a nutrient-rich addition to your garden. It's truly a win-win situation!

Setting up your home worm bin:

- Choose a location that is protected from rain and easily accessible.

- Select the type of bin you would like; options range from simple rubber containers to commercially available bins designed for vermicomposting.

- Prepare the bedding: use old black ink newsprint, shredded cardboard, or leaves, along with a small amount of grit like sand or crushed eggshells. Wet the bedding and wring it out until it feels like a damp sponge, aiming for around 75% of this as your bin content.

- Start the microbial buffet! To establish a solid microbial base in your bin before adding worms, lightly bury a banana peel or apple core to get the microbes activated.

- Wait 1-2 weeks before introducing your worms; this allows the food source to break down, creating a good environment for your new friends.

- Add your composting worms to the bin and cover it with a jute worm blanket or some moistened cardboard. Place a light over the bin for the first 24-48 hours to help the worms acclimate, as they prefer the dark and this will deter any escapees!

- Give the worms about a week to settle in before disturbing them or providing them with additional food.
